RESERVE — A barrage of gunfire exchanged from separate vehicles in Reserve landed two local men in medical care and authorities with a host of questions and numerous uncooperative witnesses, Sheriff Mike Tregre said.

The victims were shot overnight Friday.

“Two people were in one car, and it looks like one or two people were in the other car,” Tregre said Tuesday morning. “Shots were exchanged by occupants of both vehicles. I can’t tell you if all of the occupants of car one were armed and shooting back, and I can’t tell you if all of the occupants of car two were armed and shooting back. But you can see an exchange of gunfire.”

Tregre said the gunfire was captured on surveillance video from the parking lot of a Reserve business.

St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies began their investigation after locating a 38-year-old Reserve man with a gunshot wound to his leg on the porch of a house in the 100 block of East 1st Street at 12:26 a.m. Saturday.

The victim, who’s name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital for medical treatment. His current condition is unknown, authorities said Tuesday morning.

Less than a half hour later, another man with a gunshot wound, a 32-year-old from Reserve, walked into Ochsner Medical Complex-River Parishes emergency room after sustaining a gunshot wound to his back. His condition is unknown, authorities said Tuesday. His name has also not been released.

Tregre said neither victim has been cooperative with deputies during the investigation.

For investigative reasons, Sgt. Dane Clement said authorities are not releasing the number of times the victims were shot.

Authorities said there aren’t any more shooting victims they are aware of.

“It’s to early to determine if (the shooting victims) are suspects,” Clement said.

“If we thought they were suspects, there would be charges pending, but it’s too early in the investigation to determine if charges will be forwarded against these individuals. I’m not saying that they won’t, it’s just too early to determine that.”

A motive for the shooting has not been determined.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office TIPS line at 985-359-TIPS or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.

Residents that call Crimestoppers do not have to testify and may qualify for a cash reward. Tips can also be submitted at stjohnsheriff.org/submitatip.php.

“(The victims know) who shot them, but they won’t say who it was,” Tregre said. “I’m trying to get one of them to come forward.”
