McComack: Great effort welcomes more to Chamber

The River Region Chamber had an amazing recruitment event Oct. 22 and 23.
There were approximately 40 people that committed their time throughout the day to conduct an outreach and invitation to join to hundreds of businesses, and we welcomed 61 new members as result of the recruitment event.
I’m not trying to paint a rosy picture of this process. Was it challenging? Yes. Was it a little scary? Yes.
As I’ve traveled to attend Chamber conferences to learn trends from other Chambers, this recruitment concept is used by many across the U.S. Our leadership decided to utilize local volunteer efforts to try to grow your Chamber, but could never get over the typical ten to 12 number.
With that said, they said let’s try something different, so we did. One volunteer said, “I’ll help you do this.”
Butch Ockman of Quality Cleaning gathered resources that do this kind of thing. He interviewed them and came forth to the Chamber Board with his recommendation. With that recommendation came the task of identifying COACHES. Then coaches identify their CAPTAINS. These captains picked their TEAM MEMBERS.
The actual “blitz” took place on Oct. 22 at the Chamber office. Teams showed up with their energy, enthusiasm and commitment to share the opportunity with future members to join their local Chamber.
As some may join with the expectation to be able to touch and feel their benefits, the main benefits are indirect.
Think of Chamber membership like an insurance premium.
You are investing in creating a stronger local economy; keeping the Chamber at the forefront to address local tax issues when needed or having an advocate to be the voice for a pro-business environment, speaking out on behalf of issues such as unfriendly flood protection legislation that will negatively impact our citizens and hosting forums to help you make more informed decisions at the polls.
In addition, think of your investment as a portion of your marketing and professional development budget. Your membership will allow many opportunities for you and your staff to take advantage of seminars and lunch & learns on topics directly related to helping you succeed.
