Music roots watered in LaPlace

The South Louisiana musical scene’s roots run deep.
From jazz to zydeco or rock to hip hop and everything in between, if it can be sung or played, there is a good chance someone from our region has performed it at the highest levels.
Few locales worldwide compare to the musical draw that is Greater New Orleans. The talent overflows the cramped borders of the French Quarter and is exhibited weekly in locations across South Louisiana, including the River Parishes.
The musical lineup at last month’s Andouille Festival is proof of that.
However, for any tradition to continue, there must be an effort to cultivate enthusiasm and appreciation among local youth.
Thanks to an infusion of funds from VH1 Save The Music and Toyota for program necessities and instruments, LaPlace Elementary students are continuing the region’s musical heritage through a full-functioning music program — a first for the school in 10 years.
In all, $30,000 in grant funds is being used to bring music education to local crescendo.
Toyota’s Steve Appelbaum said the company is honored to help further music advocacy at LaPlace Elementary.
“A curriculum that includes music is invaluable in igniting the passion and curiosity that encourages thinking outside of the box,” he said.
“Music invites innovation, and innovation changes the world.”
Superintendent Kevin George said school leaders are grateful so many people came together to help a school outside of St. John probably never knew existed.
“We would like them to know that our students are making music again and we are laying a foundation that we hope will follow them throughout their lives,” he said.
The earliest awards were displayed Friday when a dozen of the school’s 41 music students performed for school leaders, grant organizers and one special guest, recording artist Santigold, in town for Voodoo Music Festival.
An active LaPlace Elementary music program means more of our students will receive a well-rounded education destined to unlock doors in and outside of performance venues.
