Beam: Halloween fun is part of library’s appeal

I am exhilarated to be permitted this resource as the dais of my official introduction to St. John the Baptist Parish. My name is Natalie D. Beam and I am the Administrative Librarian/Director of the parish’s public library system.

I began my association with the system in August, and each day has been a wonderful experience and adventure that I am thoroughly enjoying.

It is a marvelous and enriching journey that offers many challenges in addition to rewarding opportunities.

As a librarian, it has always been my contention that libraries are treasures of their communities. Every book in a library, including ours, holds an experience. I personally invite all of the citizens of the parish to allow the staff to act as your guide as you explore all of our treasures.

It has been publicly declared that public libraries are great value for the money.

Books and libraries offer knowledge, which is a fundamental component to achieving, learning and progressing. In our quest to facilitate these factors, our library system boasts a wide range of books that appeal to different and diverse interests. It is our objective to appeal to all.

Books are not our only resource, as we have an abundance of other materials. In accordance with the United Nations’ declaration that “Internet access” is a human right, we offer broadband and wireless Internet service at no cost to patrons.

For the electronic or e-generation, we offer digital downloadable books through our Overdrive database.

Furthermore, there are many titles available in audiobooks or the latest crave of play-aways, which are available in both audio and video formats.

October is an exciting time at the St. John the Baptist Parish Library. In addition to the month being a preamble to the holiday season, it is also the month that we celebrate Halloween.

We have several programs to entertain all of our patrons. All ghosts, goblins and other characters are invited to our various programs. The West and Reserve branches will host Halloween celebrations Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The programs will feature scary stories, games, crafts and lots of treats.

Unfortunately, no tricks will be allowed.

Children are encouraged to wear their costumes.

The Garyville branch will hold a craft program on Monday, Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. On Oct. 30, everyone who enters the Central library (LaPlace) wearing a costume will receive a bag of goodies.

The public is invited to attend all events. For a list of all programs, please refer to our online calendar on our website or pick up a newsletter at any of our four branches.
I eagerly anticipate a long and lasting tenure with the library and look forward to building substantial relationships with the citizens, our patrons, of this distinguished community. My door is always open, and I welcome the opportunity to serve you all. Have a happy and safe Halloween.
