Riverside volleyball wins again

RESERVE — The Riverside Academy Lady Rebels’ volleyball team (16-8) closed Tuesday on a five-match winning streak.
They have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
RA defeated the St. Charles Catholic Lady Comets (13-13) Tuesday, winning three out of five games 25-19, 25-15, 16-25, 22-25 and 15-11.
Head volleyball coach Margot Frederick said her team keeps getting better.
“Our kids are improving every week,” Frederick said. “St. Charles is relentless defensively, and it was a great learning experience for our young kids to compete in a pressurized situation.”
Several of the Lady Rebels stood out, Frederick said.
“Sydney (Joseph) stepped up for us offensively in the fifth set and that was a great moment for her,” Frederick said. “She made 24 kills during the match. Briley (Becker) was a stabilizing force for us, as evidenced by her triple-double. She had 13 kills, 16 digs and 12 aces during the match.”
Frederick said Abby Bourgeois made 50 assists on Tuesday.
On Oct. 10, the Lady Rebels traveled to Jefferson to compete in a Tri-match against Riverdale (8-13) and St. Martin’s Episcopal (12-15.)
RA defeated SME’s Lady Saints 3-1 in a close match with scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-11 and 25-23.
Riverside slaughtered Riverdale 3-0 with scores of 25-6, 25-6 and 25-12.
Frederick said during the Lady Rebels’ match against Riverdale, her team scored 25 aces.
“Briley (Becker) had eight kills against Riverdale,” Frederick said. “Sydney Joseph made seven kills. Maddie Duhon and Carli Hymel had five aces each, and Abby (Bourgeois) had 15 assists.”
Frederick said she is proud of her team’s accomplishments.
“We are beginning to hit our stride, but the next two weeks will really tell us where we stand,” Frederick said. “We play John Curtis again and then head to a very tough Dunham Tournament. Facing quality opponents is the only way to get better and those matches will prepare us for the challenges ahead in the state tournament.”
After press time Friday morning, the Lady Rebels played in the St. Thomas Aquinas Tournament against St. Charles Catholic and East St. John.
The tournament continues today.
Riverside Academy’s Sydney Joseph, No. 2, jumps to serve the ball Tuesday. Joseph stepped up in the fifth set and made 24 kills.
