James I. Hymel Jr., 91, of Convent, passed away with his family by his side on Dec. 8, 2014, as a result of complications associated with Alzheimer’s.

“Jimmy” or “Mr. Jimmy,” as everyone called him, was born on Oct 18, 1923, to Jim and Marine Gravois Hymel of Convent.

He was a 1941 graduate of Jesuit High School, and in 1945 he married the love of his life, Marie Simon.

He is survived by his children James III and wife JoAnn DeLeo; Marine “Winky” and husband Anthony “Buzz” Nobile; and Jackie and husband Judge Guy Holdridge.

Hymel was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He took great pride in the fact that he and his wife started and owned Hymel’s restaurant in Convent, where he shared good food and good times with old and newly made friends for 60 years.

While running his business, he raised canaries, grew chrysanthemums for All Saints Day and loved to raise day lilies to give away in his restaurant on Mother’s Day.

Growing vegetables and raising ducks were also his daily routine. He loved entertaining at his home and camp in Grand Isle, where catching fish while cooking and enjoying his family.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of Ascension Savings & Loan and a very active member and life-long contributor to St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Hymel. He is survived by Raymond’s wife Kay and his brothers and their wives A.C. and Loretta Hymel, L.J. and Gloria Hymel and Robert “Bobby” and Ollie Hymel.

His grandchildren include Teddi Hymel Hessburg and husband Tommy Hessburg, Maura Nobile Johnson and husband Derrick Johnson, Jonathan Nobile, Adrienne Holdridge, Aimee Holdridge and Reed Holdridge.

His great grandchildren are Marie Josee’ (MJ) Hymel, Mary Elizabeth Johnson and Katherine Marie Johnson.

The family expresses warm gratitude to the outstanding staff at UMRH and to his doctor and long-time friend, Dr. John Fraiche.

Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s the Archangel Catholic Church in Convent, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when a funeral service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014.

Internment will be at St. Mary’s Chapel in Union.
