LAPLACE — Several celebrations were held throughout the River Region in honor of Veterans Day, with communities banding together to honor those who have served or are still serving their country in the various branches of the armed forces.
Hundreds of community members and veterans attended the Southeast Louisiana War Veterans Home program Tuesday, with State Rep. Randal Gaines — who served three years in the U.S. Army, 25 years in the Louisiana National Guard and received awards for his service during Operation Desert Storm and Hurricane Katrina — serving as one of the event’s speakers. The St. John Parish Young Marines and members of VFW Post 5852 of Lutcher also participated in the program.
In St. Charles Parish, more than 200 veterans and their guests gathered at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center Nov. 6 to be honored for their service in the military during the annual St. Charles Parish Veterans Day Luncheon.
Attendees enjoyed an inspirational message from guest speaker Lt. Clebe McClary, a silver and bronze star recipient and Marine veteran of the Vietnam War. The National WWII Museum’s Victory Belles entertained with a medley of Andrews Sisters hits.
In St. James Parish, community members gathered Nov. 9 for the 2014 Veterans Day Celebration, where they paid tribute to local heroes and veterans.
Colonel Richard Hansen, commander and district engineer of the New Orleans District for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, served as the guest speaker.
Entertainment was provided by band Dixieland, local dance teams and choir performances. The evening was capped with a fireworks display.
