Girls basketball staying on pace

With the girls basketball regular season wrapping up last week, L’Observateur would like to congratulate all eight River Parishes teams for their efforts this season. Prep basketball’s fanbase has been growing in the River Region by the year, and all eight teams played in front of those larger crowds with pride and determination all season long.
Three of our home squads have advanced to the postseason: West St. John, Riverside and Destrehan. West St. John and Destrehan each earned No. 6 seeds in Class 1A and 5A respectively. Riverside, meanwhile, notched the No. 14 seed in Class 2A.
Each team won 18 games or more this season, including a sterling 27-1 mark posted by Destrehan that marks the Lady Wildcats as a true contender in Class 5A. Riverside went 18-13 despite a tough schedule under first-year coach Kathy Luke.
And West St. John kept it’s recent run of stellar play alive, going undefeated in district play for a third straight year en route to a 22-5 overall record. West St. John has been to two consecutive Top 28 tournaments, including a state finals appearance last season, and the Rams seem primed to perhaps do it once again.
Good luck to West St. John, Riverside and Destrehan as each embarks on its playoff journey.
