LAPLACE – When it came time for Brownie Troop 20047 to create a project to give back to the community, new troop leader Jodi Luna saw a unique opportunity right in her own backyard.

Between the tragic events of Aug. 16 and the flooding from Hurricane Isaac two weeks later, the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office has been through some difficult times lately. And while much energy has been spent helping the office with its emotional needs, some equipment needs have arisen, such as the need to replace bullet-proof vests damaged during the storm.

That is why Luna decided she and her troop would help raise money to replace some of those vests.

“I have never seen a group of little girls so excited about the idea of doing something,” said Luna.

Luna and the brownies decided to spend a Saturday bagging groceries for tips at Winn Dixie, and according to Luna most went above and beyond.

“Most were scheduled for an hour or two but stayed the full four hours,” said Luna. “They were so proud of what they had done.”

She added, “Our motto for the day was ‘All gave some…Some gave all…Let’s help protect the rest.’”

Representatives from the Sheriff’s Office and members of the brownie troop gathered after school at St. Joan of Arc recently for the donation presentation.

The girls were clearly proud of their work.

“It feels good to donate money for them,” said 8-year-old Chloe Genovese.

Her fellow brownie, Mya Voiron, added, “I think it’s great to help.”

And Luna’s daughter, Julia Luna, said, “Even though my arms were sore from bagging, I’m happy I did it. It made me feel very good.”

It also made the members of the law enforcement agency feel pretty good.

“It’s a great thing,” said Sgt. Marshall Carmouche. “It’s hard for a kid to get their heads around what it’s for, but the generosity of the kids, it’s great.”
