Comets, Weber rally in fourth to win district crown

THIBODAUX — St. Charles Catholic rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to seal the outright District 7-3A championship for the second consecutive season, besting E.D. White, 18-14.

Austin Weber’s 1-yard touchdown run with just 43 seconds remaining in regulation went down as the official game winner, earning SCC a win over Class 3A’s ninth-ranked team in terms of power points.

St. Charles (7-2, 5-0) trailed 14-4 in the fourth quarter despite dominating the ball for much of the night. The Comets outgained the Cardinals 324 to 84 in total yardage, and held E.D. White to 32 yards and just one first down in the second half. 

But the Comets failed to score on five of their seven trips into the redzone and gave up a defensive score, creating for a down to the wire finish.

Darius Charles put E.D. White ahead 7-0 with 4:51 left in the opening quarter. The Comets got on the board for the first time with 9:31 left in the second quarter, scoring on a safety when E.D. White (6-4, 2-3) snapped a ball over its punter’s head and through the endzone.

Jace Toups pushed E.D. White ahead 14-2 when he returned a Comets’ fumble 93 yards for a score. St. Charles pulled within 10 when Luke Jackson recorded an endzone sack for another SCC safety.

Weber and Garrett Lubin combined for a 9-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to make it 14-11.

Weber rushed 14 times for 57 yards with a touchdown and passed for 198 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.  Lewis rushed 12 times for 68 yards to lead St. Charles on the ground. Chad McNeil caught five passes for 86 yards and Lubin added four more for 62.
