What will we remember 50 years from now?

Tomorrow, as part of the Reserve150 Family Fun Day, local residents will have the chance to contribute photographs and letters to a 50-year time capsule that will be unearthed in 2060.
It makes one wonder how future generations will view what they find 50 years from now. Certainly, for those of us living in 2010, the times seem turbulent and problem-filled, but when this capsule is opened in 2060, what will those present for the opening see?
After all the reminiscing and nostalgia subsides, will they remember the struggles of the present time?
Probably not.
History has a way of whitewashing the sins of the past. The year 1960 was certainly not without its share of struggles and battles, but when those who lived through it look back on that time, the warm, fuzzy memories tend to be the ones that stick out.
The same is true for those who were not yet born in 1960. Although history books may teach otherwise, many of the younger generations view the 1960s as a simpler, relatively problem-free era.
Perhaps we can all learn a lesson from this future populace. It is very easy to get bogged down in the daily problems and worries that plague everyone, but maybe we should all, every once in a while, take a step back and learn to see ourselves as those in 2060 will see us.
A proper sense of perspective can do wonders for the mind.
