DESTREHAN — An early morning train derailment in St. Charles Parish prompted the evacuation of about 12 homes in the Destrehan area, according to a release from State Police and Parish Officials.
No injuries have been reported and there is no sign of any leak from the derailed tanker cars, State Police said this morning. St. Charles Spokeswoman Renee Simpson said the evacuation, which occurred just after 6 a.m., was a precautionary measure. State Police have since lifted the evacuation order as of 10 a.m.
According to the parish release, about seven train cars owned by Canadian National Railroad left the tracks about 6 a.m. Wednesday, south of the intersection of Becky Lane and Madewood Drive. State police hazardous materials officials were on the scene with St. Charles fire fighters and sheriff’s deputies. It was not immediately known what was in the derailed cars.
