LAPLACE – Rain has wreaked havoc with the American Legion Second District playoffs, which hadn’t seen a game completed as of Friday morning despite a scheduled Tuesday start.
All games were rained out Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, Townsend Homes (St. Charles Catholic) and Otto Candies (Hahnville) completed 4.5 innings, but saw the rain push its conclusion back.
The two teams were scheduled to finish the game at 11 a.m. on Friday (after presstime) but that too was up in the air due to threatening weather conditions.
“It just depends on what happens with the weather and when everyone can get these games in,” said Townsend Homes coach Paul Waguespack. “It depends on when we finish ours, when the other games are completed, and who wins. So right now, we really don’t know anything in terms of the schedule.”
Waguespack and his team were tied 2-2 with Otto Candies when the rain made things unplayable.
Otto Candies has knocked Townsend out of the tournament in each of the last three seasons. Unlike their previous three meetings, this is a first round game in the double-elimination tournament.
Regardless, the winner is set to face either top seeded Valero-St. Charles (Destrehan), GNO Vending (St. Martin’s) or Bell Office Machines (East Jefferson).
The latter two teams were set to play on Tuesday, and the winner of that game was off to play Valero, which earned a bye by virtue of its top seed.
The top two teams from the tournament will advance to the Southeast Regional at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, beginning July 10.
