Riverside coach Britt Waguespack wants to see his team loosen up on the field. Otherwise, he says, results like Monday’s are going to crop up far more often than many in Reserve would like.

The Rebels fell on the road to St. Amant, 8-2, in the season opener for both teams.

Riverside (0-1) fell behind the Gators (0-1) 7-0 in the first two innings, in large part because the Rebels committed seven errors in the game.

“We fell behind early,” said Waguespack. “And we played tight once that happened. When you play by the seat of your pants like that, the ball always finds you.

“I don’t care who you are or who you’re playing. If you commit seven errors, you aren’t going to beat anyone.

It just comes down to a lack of concentration.”

Ritchie Terrio (0-1) took the loss for Riverside. He lasted an inning and gave up seven runs – though only three were earned.

Jake Roussel and Chase Bazile collected Riverside’s only two hits in the game.

The Rebels got on the board in the fourth inning, after Roussel singled drive in Remi Poirrier, who walked to get on.

In the sixth, Bryant Tassin singled to right to drive in Dylan Martin, who reached after being hit by a pitch.

But the Rebels missed other opportunities to score.

“We left seven guys on base, four in scoring position,” said Waguespack. “What we’ve got to get across is that we can’t sit back. We’ve got to attack the game. The biggest threat to us is ourselves right now.”

One bright spot for Riverside was the pitching of Tassin, who relieved Terrio and gave up one hit and an earned run in five innings.

“He performed really well,” said Waguespack. “He kept the ball low. He walked three guys, but he was pitching well. We made plays behind him too, which helped out a lot.”
