Taylor
Wilie Mae “Powwell” Taylor, died August 15, 2008. She is the daughter of the late Aldonia and Eddie Stewart Sr., wife of the late Lawrence Taylor, mother of Gail William, Claudia Bowser, Eddrain William, Cupid William, Kenneth T. William, and the late Tyrone Alexander. She is the sister of Ethel Mae Jackson, Geneva Long, Eddie Stewart Jr., Milton Stewart and the late Eura Lee Porter, Dorothy Knight, Velma Lee, Gloria Davis, Alice Alexis, Melvin Stewart and Raymond Stewart. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 23, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Bardell’s Mortuary of Mt. Airy, and from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at New St. John Missionary Baptist Church, located at 287 Daffodil St., Mt. Airy. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Interment in Western Cemetery, Lutcher, La.
Hymel
Wilfred ‘Pete’ Hymel, a self-employed carpenter and sugar cane farmer passed on Monday, August 18, 2008, 6:00 p.m. at age 93 at his residence. A native and resident of Vacherie. He was of Catholic Religion.
Visitation and services were held on Wednesday, August 20, at the St. Philip Catholic Church in Vacherie. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am at St. Philip Catholic Church. Interment in St. Philip Mausoleum in Vacherie.
Survivors include his wife Lucy Hymel, sons, Wilfred Hymel Jr. and Blaise Hymel, daughters, Rebecca Hebert and Ramona Hymel, also survived by five grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Preceded in death by: Father, Charles Benjamin Hymel; Mother, Marie Felicie Tregre Hymel; Brothers: Sidney, Joseph, Jean, Lucien, Noe and Norman Hymel; Sisters: Sister Mary Loyola, Elvina Hymel, Stella Hymel and Paula Blaise; Grand-daughter, Erica Jazz Hymel and Daughter-in-law, Cindy R. Hymel.
Martin
Ricky A. Martin, age 57, a United States Veteran, departed this life on Sunday, August 17, 2008, in Metairie, La. Son of the late Clarence and Dorothy Martin. Loving companion of Laverne Green. Father of Brittany Martin, Nicole Age, Ernest III, Eric and Anthony Green. Brother of Larry, Wayne and Mary Ann Martin and Maxine Bovie. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A native of and resident of Reserve.
Visitation and services were held Milesville Memorial Church of God in Christ in LaPlace on Friday, August 22. Interment in Antioch Cemetery in Paulina.
Nelson
Reverend Dalton Nelson, age 61, departed to his heavenly kingdom on Monday, August 18, 2008, at the River Parishes Hospital in Laplace. Pre-Katrina, he was a resident of New Orleans and post-Katrina became a resident of Laplace. He was an associate minister of the Fairview Baptist Church, a retired U. S. Postal Service employee and a veteran of the U. S. Armed Service. He served this country in Vietnam and received the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He is preceded in death by his parents, Urence and Adele Nelson. Survivors include his beloved wife, Vadie Payton Nelson; sons: Doiron and Brian Nelson; step-son: Bryan Honore; grandchildren: Cameron Thorns, D’Errah and Elonna Nelson; brothers and sisters: Urence, Arnold and Wardel Nelson, Comora Holmes, Beverly Marcelin and Elaine McKenzie; brother-in-laws: Isaac Delandro, Willie Thomas and Larry Payton; sister-in-laws: Neotha Nelson, Naomi Delandro, Janice Thomas and Elenora Turner; godchildren: Keith Nelson and Trent Holmes; a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Visitation and services were held on Friday, August 22, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home in New Orleans. Interment at All Saints Mausoleum.
Pleasant
Loretta (Mamalo) Pleasant, a retired school custodian, died Thursday, August 14, 2008, at 8:15pm at Thibodaux Regional Medical Center. She was 90 years old. A native and resident of St. James. Survived by her daughter, Eula Bergeron; two sons: Roland Jasmin and Warren Pleasant; three brothers: Rev. Leon, Oscar and Dolan Franklin; one step sister, Dorothy Issac; and one devoted caretaker, Victoria Joseph.
Preceded in death by husband, Earl Pleasant Sr.; parent: Virginia and Oscar Franklin Sr.; and children: Clarence and Anna Jasmin; and one grandson, Clarence Jasmin III.
Visitation and services were held at St. Luke Baptist Church on Thursday, August 21. Burial in Church Cemetery.
Smith
Doyce Smith, 79, of Luling, died Thursday, August 14, 2008, at St. Charles Parish Hospital.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife of 41 years, Marcelle Ogden Smith.
Survivors include a son, David Doyce Smith, of Gainsville, Ga.; two daughters Denise Dianne Harper and husband David of Longview, Texas, and Lanell Marie Landry and husband Patrick of Lake Charles, La.; one sister, Ola Smith Webb and her husband Bill of El Dorado. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Amanda Dianne Harper and Stephanie Anne Harper of Longview, Texas, and Daniel Patrick Landry and Ryan William Landry of Lake Charles, La.
Services were held Tuesday, August 19, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Interment followed in Craig Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to West St. Charles Baptist Church in Luling.
