LAPLACE — The heat was on the Comets Monday afternoon after they fell behind to Holy Cross in the Cretin Homes Legion summer league opener. But their batters had ice water in their veins for the seventh inning as they packed the bases and scored three for the 9-8 rally.
The Comet win looked as though it just wouldn’t be mid-way through the game when Holy Cross took a 7-3 lead after a pair of errors by the Comets defense. But St. Charles posted two in the bottom of the fifth and brought out Stephen Duhe in relief in the bottom of the sixth where he gave up just two hits in two innings to make it 7-5 going into the final side. There, B.J. Cancienne created a spark with an RBI double to put himself in position as the tying run. Phillip Sutton came up next and singled to advance Cancienne to third. Matt Heltz loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch, and Alex Morris pushed in Cancienne by taking a base on balls. That set the stage for Nick Reine who hit a sharp single passed the third baseman to score Sutton as the winning run.
Sutton started off on the mound for the Comets and went through five innings while giving up eight hits. He converted to catcher in the sixth and had three hits and an RBI.
Holy Cross was also at St. Charles this passed weekend for the Comet Classic as SCC played host for a junior legion tournament which also featured Destrehan, Hahnville, Shaw and Rummel. The opener came on Friday in a Destrehan/St. Charles match-up where the Comets took an 8-2 win. Holy Cross came out on top against Hahnville and Shaw took a win over Rummel in what turned out to be a preview of the championship game where the results were much the same. On Saturday, SCC topped Hahnville 16-6 before falling 4-2 against Holy Cross. And on Sunday, St. Charles beat Hahnville again for a chance at the title game, but fell to Rummel who went on to take runner-up.
