It was not the kind of momentum that SCC boy’s head coach Jeff Montz was looking for.

Despite 33 points from Michael Troglen, St. Charles Catholic fell to Pearl River 63-62 Friday night.

Jon Bonura and Andrew Coleman both had 11 points in the defeat for SCC.

“We jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter before they settled down,” Montz said. “It was only a four-point game at the half.

“They really opened up in the second half and had a 15-point lead late in the game. However, we rallied and really came back well. We were able to grab a one-point lead with under a minute remaining. They were able to get a put-back basket to give them a 63-62 lead. We got a shot at the bucket at the end, but we just didn’t score. The comeback just fell short.”

With district play opening up, Montz said this type of loss against the Rebels is not the springboard he was looking for.

“We always want to go into district off of a win,” Montz said. “Our kids did show a lot of heart after falling behind. I just would have rathered that we finished the job.”

“We have to be able to take the basketball and be more consistent to be successful in district. We have to protect the basketball.”

After opening up district play yesterday against the Widlcats of St. James, SCC returns to action Friday against Vanderbilt Catholic.
