A valiant effort comeback effort fell just short Monday night as St. Charles Catholic fell to Grace King 53-45 in overtime in the first round of the Riverside Tournament.

Jon Bonura led the Comets with 13 points and Michael Troglen had 12. Robert McGill led all scorers with 19 points for Grace King.

Opening the game on a 12-5 run, Grace King (4-11) held a 23-15 halftime lead.

SCC (7-9) came out on fire to start the second half and behind six third quarter points by Troglen, cut the Grace King lead to 34-29 heading into the final period.

Casey Robottom’s three-point play gave the Comets their only lead of the game with 1:48 remaining in regulation.

However, McGill and the rest of the Grace King post players took over in the overtime period, outscoring SCC 13-5 to come away with the victory and advances in the winner’s bracket.

“It was a physical game,” SCC head coach Jeff Montz said. “They had more size so that played to their advantage down the stretch. In the end they made more free throws than us.

Montz said one of the biggest differences in the game was the size of Grace King and his team’s inability to key the key rebound when needed.

“We were in position I felt like a few times and all I can do is tell my guys to do that,” Montz said. “Once they are in position if the guy is just taller and grabs the rebound you just have to continue to play fundamental basketball and hope things fall your way.”
