Belle Chasse tops Lutcher in five

Lutcher drops to 3-3 in district

LUTCHER – The Belle Chasse Lady Cardinals remained in first-place in District 7-III with a tough 15-25, 25-14, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory over Lutcher Thursday afternoon at Lutcher Gym.

Belle Chasse’s Sara Burdin had 23 kills and Katie Talazau had 47 digs and 23 assists for Belle Chasse. Lauri Martin and Brandi Keller each had 11 kills for Lutcher, who fell to 3-3 in district play.

Burdin’s dominance showed up when Belle Chasse needed it most. With the score tied 12-12 in the fifth game, she nailed three consecutive kills to give the Lady Cardinals the victory.

The Lady Bulldogs got off to a hot start in game one. Thanks to good front court play, Lutcher jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead. Several return errors by Lutcher allowed Belle Chasse to climb back into the game and tie it 6-6.

Belle Chasse could not get an any significant run during the first game. They exchanged points with Lutcher on numerous occasions. A block by Lauri Martin gave Lutcher a 16-11 lead. Another block by Martin gave Lutcher a 21-12 lead.

Two consecutive points from Nicole Boe gave the Lady Bulldogs victory in game one.

The first part of the second game was evenly matched, as neither team could hold more than a two-point lead. The turning point, however, may have been when the Lady Cardinals expanded their 11-9 lead to 17-9. An ace from Katie Jackson and a kill by Katie Talazac and Erica Champagne gave Belle Chasse the lead for good in the second game.

An ace from Lauri Martin was the last point the Lady Bulldogs would see for the remainder of the game as Belle Chasse went on to score the next five points to win 25-14.

In the third game, the Lady Bulldogs erased a 13-9 deficit and went on an 8-0 run to grab a 17-13 lead. During the run, Traci Martin had three aces for Lutcher. The Lady Bulldogs had a 20-17 lead and then went to a 25-19 win.

The fourth game featured nine ties. Two straight aces to begin the game by Kaleigh Aguilar gave the Lady Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead. Lutcher, however, rallied back to tie the game up 3-3 thanks to two consecutive kills from Keller. Neither team was able to get more than a four point lead at any point in the fourth game.

Trailing 24-20, Lutcher cut the lead to 24-23 thanks to errors by Belle Chasse. In the end, a lift by Lutcher gave the Lady Cardinals the victory in the fourth game.
