The long road to Crowley

Weather wise, it was an eventful week. Everyone will agree with that.
It started on Monday. I had left the paper around 3 p.m. to go cover the St. Charles Catholic/Amite playoff game. The crowd at Comet Field started to file in. The game was supposed to start at 4 p.m. The umpires arrived about five minutes before the gameand everyone was ready. Unfortuantly, so was Mother Nature. The P.A announcer had just completed the starting lineups when it came down hard.
I was sitting at the table behind the screen when the rain started blowing into my face. It wasn’t fun. My notepad and scorebook was wet. I was not as much concerned about those two as I was concerned about my camera.
The camera that the paper paid about $3,000 for.
It could not get wet. Thankfully, it did not. The back of my shirt started to get wet. I felt like I had to go make a run toward the Comets dugout. We waited for what seemed like 30 minutes or so waiting to see what the rain was going to do. There was no way we were going to play. I understand that later that night the field was in pretty good shape to be played on for the next day.
It was determined that the game was to be played Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. I am assuming they wanted to play at that hour to avoid any evening thunderstorms. It was Tuesday morning (around 10:45) when it started to rain. I thought to myself they still might have a chance to play at the scheduled time. When I got there, however, it was a different story. The gate was open but there was nobody there. SCC Athletic Director David Lowry asks me “wanna go to East Ascension to cover a game?” He informed me that EA’s field was dry and that it was available.
“I guess I have no choice” is what I told him. So we form a caravan on Airline and head to Gonzales. On the way there, it begins to rain.
Again.
Luckily the field was covered. But all was still not well. When we arrived, there was no one from East Ascension there to set up the field (I.e. Put down the bases, chalk the lines etc..). I got there at 12:30. The game did not get started until around 2:45. I didn’t leave Gonzales until around 5:30p.m. For some reason, it seemed later than that.
As you are reading this, I am probably in Crowley. Either waiting for St. Charles to play or waiting for this weather to clear up.
Now, where did I put that umbrella?
