LAPLACE – When the Rotary Club of LaPlace District 6840, President Dean Torres went to the recent district tournament, he wasn’t expecting to need a pickup truck to bring back the hardware for the local group.
Not only did the LaPlace Rotary win an armful of awards, but the club was honored with the “Midsize Club of the Year” award.
Additionally, they won a Presidential Citation, Club Achievement Award, and a top individual honor for Assistant Governor Jim Hornby he received the Governor’s Award as top assistant to the governor.
“We were pretty pleased with all of this,” Torres told members “I was actually shocked at a dinner when they called my name for the ‘Midsize Club’ award. I had no idea what it was. But obviously our group is doing a lot of good things and everyone in the club should be congratulated.”
Hornby was honored for an outstanding year of local service work to the community, as well as his assistance to the district governor.
The Rotary Club is now preparing for some upcoming events, including their golf tournament May 18-20, which still needs sponsorships from local businesses.
Also, the local club will be helping in the 2007 International Rotary meeting that will be held in New Orleans that year. Preparations are already underway, 160 countries are expected to be represented.
The LaPlace club discussed a monthly research and discussion on different countries so local club members can help the visitors feel welcome.
