LUTCHER- Fans leaving at the end of the sixth inning of the softball game between St. Charles Catholic and Lutcher missed a lot.
Leading 5-4, the Lady Comets put four runs on the board to give them a 9-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning. However, the Lady Bulldogs refused to quit and came from behind to take a dramatic 10-9 victory.
The loss dropped the Lady Comets to 3-1 in district play.
SCC starting pitcher Brittany Vicknair appeared to be getting tired in the seventh. She missed the strike zone on several occasions and walked many.
Vicknair was replaced with one out in the inning by Mary Clement.
With one out and Katie Duhe on third, Clement threw a pitch that got past Lady Comet catcher Ashley Reine, which allowed Duhe to score the winning run.
There were a total of four walks in the inning. In addition, Lutcher sent nine hitters to the plate in the seventh.
Through the first three innings, St. Charles Catholic held a 3-2 lead. Lutcher took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Lead-off hitter Brandi Keller walked and moved over to second on a sacrifice. She then scored on a double steal, giving the Lady Bulldogs an early lead.
The Lady Comets got three runs of their own in the top of the third. Center-fielder Brittany Marse, who reached base on a walk, advanced to second on a hit by Angelle Cupit. The big blow of the inning was a double from Vicknair to give the Lady Comets a 2-1 lead. A single by Clement, the next batter, gave SCC a two run cushion.
With the Lady Comets leading 4-2, Lutcher scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. A single from right-fielder Whitney Bourgeois was followed by a double from Duhe. Keller then stepped up and plated home Bourgeois from third. A fielders choice by Joyce Gravois allowed Duhe to score from third base.
Leading 5-4 in the seventh, the Lady Comets added four more runs to give them a 9-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
A double by Ashley Reine led to her scoring the innings first run. Felicia Taylor then smashed a double, which allowed Reine to score from second base. Back-to-back singles by the Lady Comets, courtesy of Paige Braud and Marse, led to a couple of more SCC runs.
Top hitters for the Lady Comets were Taylor (3-4), Reine (2-4, 1 run scored) and Braud (2-4).
SCC will host the Comet Classic this afternoon.
