More than 300 guests attended LaPlace Elementary School’s “Girls With Good Attitudes Club” first fashion show on Jan. 30 in the school cafeteria. The fashion show was a fundraiser for the club. The club and fashion show were started by Laurie Francois, instructional staff member.
Sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls from the club participated in the show. Club members, Whitney Jackson and Briana Nesbitt, recently graduated from Barbizon School of Modeling and taught each of the girls modeling skills. “We practiced daily during the girls’ recess period and after school,” said Francois. “Each student who chose not to model was given an assignment that they were comfortable, with for example, some girls were DJ’s for the show, and some participated in poem reading, dancing, and mistresses of ceremony.”
Francois went on to say, “The girls’ confidence level really boosted. They hear all the time how beautiful they are from me, but that particular night, they felt beautiful. They also felt like there isn’t anything that they cannot conquer.” The girls learned how to work in groups and respect one another. They also learned what to wear to different functions, and how to coordinate colors, and what jewelry to wear with certain clothing. Teachers and their children also modeled clothing in the show. When asked if she will do it again next year, Francois commented “This was a lot of work and the question has risen, Will I do it again next year? Yes!”
