Carnival time no excuse for behaving badly

Carnival season unleashes all the excuses to party down and misbehave for thousands of people, over-indulging in alcohol, illegal drugs and other activities. However, children see adults misbehave and feel it’s socially acceptable and correct, which could lead them into such activities themselves and set themselves up for disaster.

Children learn by example, and they are very quick to learn. During Carnival season, they will often see adults who may act responsibly at any other time of the year, yet during this time, behave uncharacteristically improper.

The result is that at first opportunity, a child will often imitate what they see adults do. It’s the fortunate child who has parents who not only behave themselves but take the time to explain the misbehavior of other adults they see, to head off any misunderstanding on the part of the child. This will go far to prevent future problems for the child and lead to more responsible behavior in the future.

Drinking by anyone under the age of 21 is illegal, no matter who does it. Children need to understand this, and there is no exception, just because it’s Carnival season.

The same goes for any other improper activity, where adults are doing in public what should remain private. Children need to understand what is and is not socially responsible behavior. If they don’t learn this from their parents, they may never learn it, and children look to their parents for proper guidance and discipline. If they don’t get that attention, they will seek it elsewhere.

Enjoy Carnival, have fun and keep it family-friendly.
