RESERVE – Reserve Christian may be a small school in size, but the boys basketball team played in plenty of big time basketball games during the 2003 calendar year. Led by Demond “Tweety” Carter, the Eagles went on to win their second consecutive Class B state championship with a victory over Doyline in the championship. Carter was also named the games Most Outstanding Player.
Doyline posted a gaudy 49-1 record going into the game, but had not played the type of competition the Eagles (46-10) had played.
Throughout the season, RCS played against quality competition, such as West St. John (twice), Destrehan (twice) and Brother Martin. The team played against several 4A and 5A schools leading to their championship game.
In addition to Carter, players that also contributed included Frankie Francois, Matt Jackson and Marlon Brumfield. Francois and Jackson signed scholarships with LSU-Shreveport this past May.
Francois also excelled at Track and Field during 2003. He was one of the top track athletes that was being recruited by several division one schools. Jackson, on the other hand, was a college prospect as well by playing first base for the Eagles.
The Girls basketball team was probably remembered more for something that happened off the court rather than on the court. The Lady Eagles had to forfeit 20 games during the 2002-2003 season when Reserve Christian starter Kristin Johanson was ruled ineligible because of her dual residency. The LHSAA requires that a player can not have more than one residence at a time.
However, despite Johanson not being able to participate in games late in the year, the Lady Eagles won the Class B district championship and made the playoffs. The bi-district round saw Reserve Christian defeat Maurepas, 68-36. After a 49-21 blowout of Lacassine in the regional round, the Lady Eagles fell to Holden, 61-54, in the quarterfinals.
Leading the way for the Lady Eagles in 2003 were Trenell and Trenese Smith.
