EDGARD – Since 1998, the West St. John Rams have been on a mission. The Rams are one victory away from accomplishing that mission. A convincing 33-8 beating of Vidalia has paved the way for West St. John to play in the 2A title game next Friday night at the Superdome. Kickoff is set for 5PM.
“This is an important victory for our community,” said West St. John Head Football Coach Laury Dupont. ” The expectations were very high for this senior class.”
The Rams running game was the main reason they came out on top. Fullback Quinn Johnson and running back Patrick Jackson led the attack. “I have never felt this way in my entire life,” said Johnson, who scored two touchdowns.
After the Rams held the Vikings on fourth down, West St. John went on 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended on Johnson taking it in from the three.
Amazingly, the key play on the drive was a 29-yard run by Johnson on 3rd and 27. The Rams made three first downs on the drive.
A long pass touchdown pass from Josh Lumar to Thomas Augusta made the score 14-0 West St. John. Lumar’s touchdown pass capped off a six-play, 70-yard drive in which Johnson ran for 28 yards. The only negative during the drive was back to back penalties called against WSJ. The drive lasted only about two minutes.
With 10:11 to go in the half, West St. John held Vidalia on fourth down to force a change of possession.
On the next play, Johnson ran the ball 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Rams a 21-0 lead with 9:02 left to play. “We just played like family out there tonight,” Johnson said.
The Rams defense did not allow Vidalia to make a first down until 8:45 left in the second quarter.
It appeared that the Rams would be headed toward their fourth score of the half, but their offense stalled when they had the ball at the Vikings eight.
A 66-yard run by Trafton Edwards set the Rams up in great field position with under five minutes left in the half.
The final two touchdown runs came from Jackson. A six-yard TD run at the start of the fourth gave the Rams a 27-0 lead. He then scored on a 15-yard touchdown run to make it 33-0.
