A 13-point first half lead was not enough for the Amite Warriors against

the Lutcher Bulldog comeback kids.

Lutcher stormed back to win Friday night’s game 20-19 and earn the right to play for the state championship in the Superdome.

The winning touchdown came after Lutcher took over when Amite failed to convert a fourth down fake kick at their own 35-yard line. The Bulldogs scored six plays later on a one-yard touchdown run by Wayne Albert, taking a 20-13 lead, with 4:20 left in the game.

Amite stunned the Bulldogs with a 66-yard pass from QB Walter Mason to James Burns, making the score 20-19 with 1:21 left in the game. Lutcher stopped an attempted 2-point conversion attempt preserving the win.

“I told our guys at halftime everything that can go wrong went wrong in the first half,” Bulldog Coach Tim Detillier said. “If we could still be in

the game with a team of this caliber, we had chance to beat them.”

Detillier characterized his team’s comeback play in the past four weeks

as “unbelievable”.

Amite took charge of the game scoring on it’s first possession less than three minutes after the kickoff, then again with 2:10 left in the first quarter, to make it 13-0 after a failed PAT attempt.

Lutcher threatened to score in the first half, taking over on its own 20-yard-line, and driving to the Amite 5-yard line. During the drive Dustin Mitchell made two key passes, one for 16 yards to Gerard Landry, another for 17 yards to Juan Johnson. A fumble on a bad snap from center ended the drive. Only a come from behind tackle by Burnell Joseph stopped Amite’s Korie Hills from scoring on the fumble recovery.

Lutcher started the second half with a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped by a 2-yard TD from Wayne Albert, making it 13-7. The drive was highlighted by runs of 17 and 18 yards by Burnell Joseph.

The Bulldogs second score came on a 32-yard pas from Mitchell to Osmund Brown with 2:32 left in the third quarter.

A huge crowd attended the game, including fans from Lutcher who filled the visitor’s stand, and lined the field six, seven, eight and more deeparound more than half of the field.
