ALEXANDRIA – The East squad of all stars swept the West team, 3-2 and 10-6 in the two-day Louisiana High School Coaches Association All-Star game at Bringhurst Park in Alexandria May 24 and 25.
Among the state’s all stars, St. Charles Catholic High School’s Jason Waguespack got one more opportunity to pitch a high school baseball game during his senior year, having been selected to play on the East team.
During the first game Friday evening, Waguespack scored with one out on a passed ball during the East’s capture of the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Waguespack accounted for two runs during the second game and was walked once.
“It’s a good opportunity for him to gauge himself against the state’s best and see where he stands,” said St. Charles Catholic coach Paul Waguespack before the game.
“I know he’ll handle himself well.”
The East team scored all three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday, without hitting a ball into the outfield. The West scored its two runs in the third inning with RBI singles for the early 2-0 lead.
Mandeville pitcher Tyler Kimmons finished off the West team by closing the last two innings and West two scoring threats. The West placed runners on second and third in the ninth inning, but Kimmons defused the threat with a throw to home and a ground out.
The East team returned with a vengeance for the second game on Saturday, by driving in a 10-0 lead with nine hits in the first five innings. The East began scoring with two runs thanks to three errors, two hit batters and a passed ball. The East’s opening pitcher was Alexandria’s Greg Smith, who gave up one hit in three innings, with four strike outs.
Mandeville’s Nick Tisone picked up on the mound in the fourth inning, then allowed four runs off of three hits in the sixth inning.
Tisone was later chosen the East team MVP, alongside Ruston pitcher Stoney Stone.
The two-game series is open to only high school seniors, who have to first be nominated by their respective coaches, then selected by a panel of coaches based on their past performances.
The East and West teams each had 21 players and there are rules dividing pitching time, so more than one pitcher takes the mound for each game.
Completing the lineup for the East team was: Rummel’s Matthew Liuzza and Nathan Southard, Slidell’s Will Harris, Hannan’s Jason Schwab, Jesuit’s Tim Guidry, and Mandeville’s Nick Tisone and Tyler Kimmons.
