Coaches’ picks for Girls’ Basketball

Crystal Rome from Riverside Academy. Rome, 5-3, finished her junior year averaging 26.7 points each game, putting her well above the 2,000 point mark.

Her 83 percent free throw shooting, 61 percent of field goals, 45 percent behind the 3-point line and average of five rebounds each game earned her the District 9-2A MVP honors.

Erin Keller of East St. John Lady Wildcats. The 5-8 sophomore guard helped lead her team to its sixth-straight district title and averaged 15.9 points each game. Keller also placed All Metro and, for the second time, First Team All District.

Kaneeka Taylor from the Lutcher Bulldogs. The 5-4 senior guard averaged 17 points per game. Taylor started for four years, is a four-year letterman and is the River Parish Player of the Year.

Trenelle Smith was chosen from the Reserve Christian Eagles. The 5-8 freshman averaged 16.7 points per game.

Ashley Sentimore stood out for the Destrehan LadyCats. The 6-1 junior was a force across the court and into the paint, where she scored most of her 18.3 points per game.

Sentimore’s average of 12.5 rebounds and three blocks each game also earned her an All-Metro standing and the District MVP honor.

Toyelle Rickson from the Hahnville Lady Tigers. The 5-8 senior forward averaged 17.5 points each game.

Coaches’ picks for Boys’ Basketball

Ashlon Albert led the Lutcher Bulldogs. The 6-3 junior was the Bulldogs’ “go-to guy.” Albert led the team in rebounds and led the scoring efforts by averaging 13.3 points per game.

Daress Nicholas stood out for the St. Charles Catholic Comets. Coach Philip Cavell said the 6-3 senior improved through the season and consistently led in rebounds and scoring with 17.5 points each game.

Levar Joseph led the St. James Wildcats. The 6-2 senior guard led the Wildcats into the semifinals, while averaging 19.2 points per game.

Mark Stewart from the Destrehan Wildcats. Stewart has become synonomous with scoring for Destrehan. The a 6-1 senior guard averaged 22.2 points per game and is the second highest scorer in the area. Stewart holds numerous awards, such as All District and All River Parishes MVP.

Demond Carter from the Reserve Christian Eagles. Carter helped the Eagles to their first ever state championship as an eighth grader.
