3 students win scholarships

LULING – Three St. Charles Parish students are Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarship award winners, through the National Merit Scholarship Program. The three include the following: Glenn P. Fahrig of Luling and Hahnville High School. He will receive a Shell Companies Merit Scholarship. Fahrig plans to enter the field of forensic science. His high school activities include symphonic band for four years, drum major, jazz band for four years, Beta Club for four years, Quiz Bowl for two years, National Honor Society for three years, Literary Society for two years and Homework Hotline tutor. Erin E. Erickson of Norco and St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans. She will receive a Shell Oil Company Foundation Scholarship. Erickson plans to enter the field of chemical engineering. Her high school activities include National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Key Club treasurer, Dominican Debs dance team, National Science Olympiad and Junior Engineering Technological Society. Erin M. Rooney of St. Rose and St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans. She will receive a Tenet HealthCare Corporation Merit Scholarship. Rooney plans to enter the field of genetics. Her high school activities include National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta secretary/treasurer, Domincan Debs dance team, Student Recruitment Team, Junior Engineering Technological Society, National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine Alumni representative. The program links nearly 1,200 high school seniors with 400 corporations, company foundations and business organizations in this first group of 2001 awards. By the end of the year, more than 7,900 Merit scholarship awards worth more than $31 million will be offered to qualified recipients. Most of these scholarships are renewable for up to four years, and range from $500 to as much as $10,000 per year. Others provide a single payment between $2,000 and $5,000. These students were selected from students in the National Merit Program who advanced to the finalist level, and who meet corporate sponsors’ preferential criteria.
