Belle Terre gets state tournament

BATON ROUGE – Last May, the Riverside golf team brought home the Class 2A state championship from Shenandoah Country Club in Baton Rouge.

This Wednesday, Riverside brought home the tournament.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s executive committee approved Riverside’s bid to host the 2001 Class 2A state boys golf tournament at its third classification hearing at the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center.

The tournament is scheduled for April 30 through May 1 at Belle Terre Country Club in LaPlace. Riverside was the only school to submit a bid for thetournament “It’s exciting,” Riverside golf coach Elizabeth Torres said. “We’re lookingforward to having the home field advantage. We’re bringing everyone to ourbackyard this time. Come April 30, we’ll be ready.”Riverside won its first state golf championship in May, shooting a two-day total of 623 at Shenandoah. The Rebels’ Brett Bergeron captured theindividual state title with teammates Michael Schoen and Steve Luminais finishing in the top 10.

The Class 5A tournament will be held at Covington Country Club with Fontainebleau as the host. Notre Dame of Crowley will host the Class 3Atournament at Bayou Bend Country Club again. Other bids went to Marksville,which will host the Class 4A tournament at Tamahka Trails Golf Club, and Florien, which will hold the Division V tournament at Emerald Hills. EmeraldHills will also be the site of the girls state tournament with Pleasant Hill as the host.

The Lutcher boys swim team, which won its fifth straight Division III state title in New Orleans in November, will go for number six next year in a different but familiar location after the state swim meet was awarded to Parkview Baptist for the next two years.

The meet will be split between the LSU Natatorium and Swaggert’s Ketcham Fitness Center after being held at UNO’s Lakefront Arena Pool in recent years. Lutcher competes in the Capital City Swim League at both of theBaton Rouge sites.

State tennis tournament bids were also awarded. Sacred Heart of NewOrleans will host the Division III tournament while Springhill is the host for Division IV.
