Battery charge could have been worse

RESERVE – A 19-year-old Reserve man could have faced a fetal homicide charge instead of second-degree battery after he punched a pregnant woman twice in the torso.

However, according to Sean Roussel of River Parishes Hospital, the woman and her unborn child remain in good condition, despite having her water break.

Capt. Michael Tregre of the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Officesaid that Michael Young, 19, of 325 E. 13th St., saw his sister involved ina fist-fight with the six-months’ pregnant woman near his home at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday.The victim had been walking down the street when she was confronted by Young’s sister, who hit the pregnant woman in the face during the confrontation.

Tregre said Young joined in the fray and struck the victim in the abdomen and back, causing her water to break. She was rushed to the hospitalwhere, Roussel said, she was treated for her facial injuries. She and herbaby were checked out and released in good condition.
