Offensive explosion leads Wildcats by Cards ESJ defeats Trojans, Lutcher revenges 1999 defeat at Covington

THIBODAUX – St. James had its best offensive output of the season, gaining425 yards, in winning at E.D. White, 38-20, Friday night in District 9-3A play.St. James improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in district play. The Wildcats hostLutcher next week in a battle for the district lead. E.D. White fell to 4-4overall and 0-2 in district.

St. James gained 240 yards on 45 rushing attempts, led by Travell Steib with129 yards on 19 carries. Donavan Williams added 64 yards and a touchdownon 11 carries. Michael Harry ran 12 times for 38 yards. Chris Hymelcompleted 6-of-20 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Davin Denniscaught three of the passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Justin Auberthad two catches for 21 yards and a score.

Jonathan Becnel ran 21 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns for the Cardinals. Evan Matherne completed 5-of-12 passes for 119 yards and atouchdown. Matt Matis caught four passes for 100 yards and a score. TheCardinals gained 303 yards in offense but turned the ball over five times, including four fumbles.

St. James got on the scoreboard in the first quarter as Hymel connectedwith Aubert from six yards out. Quentin Batiste added the extra point,making it 7-0 with 8:33 left in the first quarter.

The Wildcats increased their lead with 9:22 left in the second quarter as Thaddeus Sutherland picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a score. Batiste added the extra point, making it 14-0.E.D. White got on the board early in the second quarter on a 65-yard passfrom Matherne to Matis. James Wilcox added the extra point, making it 14-7with 7:58 left in the half.

The Cardinals tied the game on a 1-yard run by Becnel. Wilcox again addedthe extra point with 3:19 remaining before halftime.

St. James went ahead again as Hymel scored from a yard out with eightseconds left in the half. The kick failed but it was 20-14 St. James at thebreak.

E.D. White tied it again on Becnel’s 23-yard run with 10:38 left. The pointafter was no good.

Hymel put the Wildcats ahead to stay with another 1-yard run with 1:28 left in the third quarter, making it 26-20.

Dennis increased the lead in the fourth quarter by catching an 82-uard scoring pass from Hymel. The kick failed but the Wildcats led 32-20. Williamscapped the scoring with a 20-yard run with 2:17 remaining in the contest.

East St. John 31,Central Lafourche 14

RACELAND – In a district game, East St. John shut down the CentralLafourche Trojans with a convincing 31-14 victory. The Wildcats out-ran,out-passed and out-played the Trojans for the entire game.

In rushing, the Wildcats had 219 yards, 199 of them by running back Chuckie Burl.

Wildcat quarterback Darwin Pittman had 27 attempts for 12 completions, 138 yards and three touchdowns, as compared to Trojan quarterback T. J.Vedros who only had three completions from 14 attempts for a paltry 36 yards.

In the end the 357 of total Wildcat yardage was too much for Central Lafourche who only had 190 total yards.

East St. John hosts South Terrebonne Friday.

Lutcher 31, Covington 7

COVINGTON – The Lutcher Bulldogs really chewed up the Covington Lions Friday night. With a strong defense and strong running, the Bulldogsmanaged to de-fang the Lions by a score of 31-7.

The Bulldog defense played a major part in the victory as they intercepted the Covington quarterback five times during the game. In the first quarteralone, the Lions were intercepted four times.

Lutcher’s victory did not reflect the statistics of the game. Covington had185 total yards as compared to 158 for the Bulldogs. And despite all theinterceptions, the Lions out-passed the Bulldogs 103 yards to 60.

Lutcher plays at cross-parish rival St. James Friday in District 9-3A play.
