SJ, SCC facing must win situation

ST. JAMES – St. Charles Catholic and St. James will be presenting theirown version of the hit show “Survivor” Friday night.
With both teams coming off losses in the first week of District 9-3A play, the loser of their matchup at St. James Friday will probably be voted outof the district race. The winner will be right back in the mix to see whowill be the last one left on the district island at the end of the season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.St. James enters the game with a 3-3 overall record and a 0-1 mark inDistrict 9-3A after a 34-28 loss at Donaldsonville last Friday. TheWildcats lost despite getting 316 yards on offense, including 211 running the ball. Travell Steib led the way with 111 yards and two touchdowns on16 carries. Michael Harry also broke the century mark, gaining 103 yardsand a touchdown on 15 attempts. Chris Hymel threw for 95 yards and atouchdown.
But Donaldsonville had 342 yards of its own in rallying from a 21-12 halftime deficit. The Tigers also recovered three fumbles by the Wildcatsand intercepted a pass.
St. James has gotten the job done via the run this year. Friday’s game wasthe fifth time the Wildcats have rushed for over 140 yards and the second time they broke the 200-yard mark this season. Steib’s and Harry’sperformances were the third and fourth time the Wildcats have had a 100- yard rusher in a game.
St. Charles Catholic is also coming off a tough loss at home to Lutcher,21-7. The loss dropped the Comets to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in district play.The Comets were able to move the ball, finishing with 249 yards in offense. But the Comets’ woes of putting points on the scoreboard aftermoving into their opponent’s territory continued. St. Charles Catholiccrossed midfield seven times but came away with points just once.
Jason Waguespack led the way for the Comets, completing 18 of 37 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Six different receivers caught passes, ledby Toby Jacob and Phillip Hoffman who combined for 10 catches and 96 yards. Doug Friloux led the ground attack with 30 yards on nine carries.With Friday night’s performance, Waguespack went over the 1,000-yard mark in passing. He now has completed 99-of-183 passes for 1,140 yardsand five touchdowns.
Last year’s game was an aerial battle between St. James’ Corey Websterand St. Charles Catholic’s Nick Monica. Webster threw for 207 yards andfour touchdowns and also ran for 63 yards to help the Wildcats to a 41-31 victory. Monica matched him, throwing for 175 yards and three scores andrunning for another 71.
Next week, St. James travels to E.D. White while St. Charles Catholic hostsDonaldsonville in District 9-3A action.
