RESERVE – The MetroVision School-to-Career Partnership, in conjunction with CitiStreet LLC, presented checks totaling $8,000 from the CitiGroup Foundation to two St. John the Baptist Parish high schools at the bi-monthly school boardmeeting held recently.
East St. John High School and West St. John High School each received a $4,000grant from the national foundation to provide materials, supplies and student incentives for the schools’ financial services academies, which are operated according to National Academy Foundation standards. The academies allowstudents with interests in the fields of financial services to take classes that utilize targeted curriculum, complete summer internships in related businesses and participate in other work-based learning opportunities.
“This money will allow our finance academy to involve more students in a stock market game, purchase more software in relation to finance and provide staff development for the finance academy team and the rest of the faculty to familiarize them with the world of finance,” said Mary Elizabeth Johnson, director of the finance academy at West St. John High School.Teachers at the schools wrote the proposals for the grants according to the CitiGroup Foundation’s criteria, one of which stipulates that grantees must have a CitiGroup Foundation member company as one of its business partners. In thisregion, CitiStreet (formerly the Copeland Companies) serves as a prominent business partner for the financial services academies in the seven-parish MetroVision School-to-Career region.
“This is really about good corporate citizenship. We’re doing our part to ensurethat there’s a qualified workforce available for financial services careers,” said Tracy Spellman, regional manager for CitiStreet.
The awards to the two St. John schools are the first of several awards to be madein this region.
The MetroVision School-to-Career Partnership strives to achieve systemic change in education by establishing relationships between business and educators in the a seven-parish region, including St. Charles, St. James and St. John parishes.
