Local college athletes have weekend of firsts

LAPLACE – Last week’s collegiate football weekend was one of firsts for a couple of River Parishes graduates.

East St. John grad Roydell Williams had his first receptions for Tulane in theGreen Wave’s 37-17 loss at East Carolina Saturday. The freshmen receivercaught four passes for 86 yards with a long of 39. His first catch came on aslant pattern for 20 yards.

Another first came in Clemson’s 55-7 win over Wake Forest as Tigers running back Chad Jasmin scored his first collegiate touchdown on an 11- yard run in the fourth quarter. The St. James grad rushed for 26 yards onseven carries. For the season, the red-shirt freshman has carried 11 timesfor 60 yards and caught one pass for one yard.

East St. John graduate Greg Gathers scored on a 6-yard fumble return in thethird quarter of Georgia Tech’s 40-13 victory over Navy.

Tulane’s Casey Roussel, a St. Charles Catholic graduate, punted five timesfor a 41.4 average with a long of 48 yards against East Carolina.Chad Carter, a Lutcher alum, carried the ball five times for 23 yards and a touchdown in Nicholls State’s 27-21 loss at Louisiana-Monroe. Carter scoredon a 9-yard run in the second quarter, giving the Colonels a 21-14 lead.

Kenric Johnson, another Lutcher grad, had three catches for 10 yards.

A third Lutcher alum, Allen Stark, caught a 35-yard touchdown pass for Louisiana Tech in the first overtime period against Stephen F. Austin.Stephen F. Austin would come back to get a 34-31 victory in the secondovertime.

In a season update, Southern Mississippi freshman Kenneth Johnson, a Lutcher graduate, has two catches for 18 yards.

Another Lutcher alum, Dan Anderson, has two catches for 12 yards as a senior tight end at Southern. East St. John alum Kerry Watkins has caughtfive passes for 66 yards and a touchdown at Georgia Tech and has also carried the ball twice for 17 yards.

Another former East St. John receiver, T.J. Sutherland, has eight catchesfor 111 yards for Northwestern (La.) State. He caught four passes for 44yards in a 31-14 season-opening win over Southern, then caught four passes for 67 yards in the Demons’ 19-7 loss to Central Florida.

Miami (Fla.) junior safety Edward Reed, a Destrehan graduate, has oneinterception on the season, returning it 20 yards in the Hurricanes’ victory over McNeese State in the season opener.
