LUTCHER – The Lutcher Bulldogs literally drove to a victory over East St.
John Friday night.
The Bulldogs went on time-consuming drives in each half and Tyrone Martin and William Adams each scored two short touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 26-11 victory. It was the second straight win in the series for the Bulldogs.Martin led the Bulldogs with 84 yards on 17 attempts, including touchdowns of 2 and 1 yard. Adams added 81 yards on 19 carries, including 2 and 1-yardtouchdowns. Risley St. Germain completed 7-of-9 passes for 78 yards.East St. John gained 206 yards in offense. The Wildcats carried 30 times for138 yards, led by Tremaine Moore with 81 yards on 13 carries. Chuckie Burlhad 30 yards on eight attempts. Darwin Pittman completed 5-of-15 passesfor 55 yards. Chance Blank completed his only attempted for a 13-yardtouchdown to Raydel Patterson.
Lutcher opened the second half with a 13-play, 68-yard drive that ate up 7:22 of the clock. The drive was aided by a 15-yard roughing-the-punter callagainst the Wildcats on fourth-and-29 at the Lutcher 35. Adams swept rightfor 12 yards to the Lutcher 44 but an errant pitch on an option and an offsides penalty pushed the Bulldogs back to the 35. St. Germain came in topunt and boomed one to the Wildcats 22 but was roughed on the play, giving the Bulldogs a first down at midfield.
Lutcher took advantage of the opportunity as Adams swept right for 11 yards and Martin went off the left side for eight more to the Wildcat 8.
Adams went off the right side for six yards to the 1 where Martin took it in off left tackle one play later for the score. The extra point was wide left,leaving the score 13-3 with 4:29 left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs forced the Wildcats to punt on the ensuing possession and took over at their 48. On third-and-18 from the 40, St. Germain overthrew hisreceiver but the Wildcats were called for interference, giving the Bulldogs a first down at the East St. John 45. Martin then cut left for a 15-yard gain tothe 30. Two plays later, Adams swept right for 19 yards to the 12. Martinwent up the middle to the 2 and Adams took it in off the left side for the score. The extra point by Bourgeois was good, making it 20-3 with 11:57 leftin the game.
Lutcher got the ball back a play later as David Pittman tipped a Darwin Pittman pass at the Lutcher 35 and Williams grabbed his second interception at the 30, returning it to midfield. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty wasassessed against the Wildcats, giving the Bulldogs the ball at the East St.
John 35. Adams and Martin took turns running the ball to the 13. Martincarried for seven and five yards to the 1 where Adams went off the left side for the score. The extra point failed, making it 26-3 with 6:55 left in thegame.
Pittman intercepted Darwin Pittman on the ensuing play from scrimmage at the Lutcher 41 and returned it to the East St. John 40. A penalty against theWildcats gave Lutcher possession at the 25. But the Bulldogs failed to movethe ball and Bourgeois’ 43-yard attempt sailed wide right.
East St. John took over at its 20 and drove for its second score of thegame. Pittman found Louis Gardner for six yards and Mervin Williams for 17yards for a first down at the 43. Moore went up the middle for 10 yards tothe Lutcher 47. Moore then carried for 16 yards, then for 14 more to the10. Two plays later, Blank lofted a pass to Patterson in the left corner ofthe end zone for the score from 13 yards out. Chad Henry swept in for theconversion, bringing the Wildcats to within 26-11 with 30.1 seconds left.Blank tried an onsides kick but Jared Alexis fell on the ball at the Lutcher 28.
The first half was also one of sustained drives. East St. John took over thefirst possession of the game at its 33 and drove to the Lutcher 33 in 10 plays. Burl had gains of six, seven and eight yards on the drive. The Bulldogsheld at the 33, stopping Burl for no gain on fourth-and-5.
Lutcher answered with a 11-play, 67-yard drive that took up 5:55 of the clock. Martin opened the drive with a 7-yard run to the 40. On second-and-16from the 39, St. Germain found Donnie Francois slanting in from the rightside for 17 yards to the East St. John 44. Four plays later, Johnson made adiving catch along the right sidelines for a 35-yard gain to the 7. Martin tookit in off right guard three plays later from the 2. T.J. Bourgeois’ extra pointwas good, giving Lutcher a 7-0 lead with 1:32 left in the first quarter.
Lutcher got the ball back as Lawrence Williams tipped a Pittman pass on third-and-9 from the East St. John 43. James Williams intercepted the passat his 40 and returned it 18 yards to the Lutcher 42. Lutcher drove to theWildcat 26 as the second quarter opened behind a 9-yard screen pass from St. Germain to Adams and a 5-yard run by Adams. But the Wildcats held andBourgeois’ 43-yard field goal attempt was short and wide right with 9:57 left in the half.
East St. John then held the ball for all but 27.8 seconds of the half, going ona 19-play, 78-yard drive. The Wildcats converted one third down and twofourth downs on the drive. On third-and-3 from the East St. John 43,Pittman snuck up the middle, picking up the first down by the nose of the football. On fourth-and-4 from the Lutcher 34, Williams took an insidehandoff and cut right for 14 yards to the 20. After an 8-yard sack by DervinDavis, Pittman found Wade Walker on the right sides for 16 yards and a first down at the 6. But Lutcher held with Jeremy Foreman stopping RaydelPatterson in the left flat at the 3. Chance Blank came in to convert the 19-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 7-3 with 27.8 seconds left in the half.
