St. James captures NSA World Series

VACHERIE – The 13-year-old St. James Devil Rays won the 2000 NSA WorldSeries 13U Bronze Division July 29 in Tealtown Ballpark, Ohio.
The Devil Rays won seven games and lost one in the tournament. The road tothe championship began with a loss in the first game but the Devil Rays went on to its next seven games.
The championship game against the Cincinnati Lookouts was a real nail-biter.
The score was tied at 4 after seven innings leading to extra innings. TheLookouts scored one run in the top of the eight but the Devil Rays came back with two runs with one out in the bottom half to win the championship, 6-5.
The team had 75 hits and scored 70 runs in the series. Roland Rodrigue ledthe way with 12 hits. Doyle Roussel and Lee Simon had 10 hits apiece.Matthew Roussel and Nicholas Falgoust each had eight while Christopher Hymel, Ricky Waguespack and Jay Becnel all had six hits. Christopher Speakschipped in with five hits and Robbie Ocmond with four.
The pitching staff did an excellent job in the series. Rodrigue pitched 20innings while Simon gave the Devil Rays 17 innings. Matthew Roussel pitched12 innings, Becnel five and Doyle Roussel two.
The week began with a skills competition Saturday, July 22. Rodrigue won theHome Run Derby contest with Simon placing third and Matthew Roussel fourth. Doyle Roussel and Becnel also participated in the competition.Waguespack finished third in the Outfield Throwing Accuracy contest with Ocmond, Speaks, Hymel and Falgoust also competing.
The Devil Rays’ season began in March and ended with the World Series win.
The team had 48 wins, 21 losses and three ties during the season. It placedfirst and third at tournaments in Breaux Bridge, won the consolation brackets at tournaments at the Ball Park of Baton Rouge and at Gravois Park in Vacherie, and won first place at four tournaments at Drillers Diamond in Baton Rouge.
The wins qualified the Devil Rays for a berth at the state NSA tournament at Drillers Diamond where they swept to five straight victories.
Winning the state tournament sent the Devil Rays to the NSA World Series.
Coaches for the team were Keith Falgoust, Roland Rodrigue Sr., and DoyleRoussel Sr. Players were Doyle Roussel Jr., Nicholas Falgoust, Lee Simon,Matthew Roussel, Robbie Ocmond, Charlie Harrell, Roland Rodrigue Jr., JayBecnel, Christopher Speaks, Christopher Hymel and Ricky Waguespack.
