DEAR EDITOR: Just recently, a letter was published regarding parish organizations not shopping in St. John Parish. This policy has been going on for years. As aparish businessman now for 50 years, I’ve experienced this for just about that many years.
Every time an event is planned, you know who’s asked for donations of money or supplies? It’s the parish businesses who do the donating, but the donations are spent at the big stores out of the parish. We don’t even get achance to get the order. Some people will spend half a day and five gallonsof gas shopping 30 miles away to save $3. Now, does that make sense?Shopping local has always been the best and most economical way to shop.
If you want to determine where to do your shopping, read the ads in your parish papers and organization’s programs. You won’t see an ad for thegiant, so-called wholesalers and sellers that sell so cheap. You will seethe ads from the small places that make up your town. That can be a hintof where you should shop.
