St. James girls enjoy week of fun

CONVENT – Six- to 9-year-old girls from six St. James Parish housingdevelopments gathered Friday at St. James Park to top off their Girl ScoutDay Camp with a day of fun.

By 8:30 every morning the Housing Authority bus was circling the parish, gathering up waiting girls for their day’s activities. The girls, some 35 to 40in all, learned to do all sorts of things from making necklaces to potting plants. Most of the young girls said they had the most fun playing dodge balland jump rope.

On Friday they had a cookout with hot dogs for lunch and continued with their favorite games. St. James Park was alive with excited girls flying high on theswing sets and playing with their new friends from the neighboring developments. They received their certificates for the Girl Scout week andsat in excited groups over lunch deciding what they should perform for the talent show.

There were a lot of girls interested in the week, said Housing Authority director R.M. Jackson. Volunteers and housing authority staff made the weekpossible.

For the boys, the housing authority has scheduled a Boy Scout Day Camp for June 19-24.

“They keep coming up and saying ‘when do we get to do something?'” said Jackson. They weren’t raring to go until they found out the fun their sistersand friends were having, added Jackson.

Volunteers were Diedra Goff and Shalla Harris, and housing authority staff members were Melissa Harris and Mae Evelyn Johnson.

The Girl Scouts were Shandrika Bright, Alaysha Keller, Biance Steib, Jennika Jones, Ashley Broden, Deshaunnisha Broden, Precious Rodney, Jessica Rodney, Miyosha Charles, Shantell Jones, Lafita Diggs, Kerteria Goff, Lakoia Goff, Precious Gray, Shardannay Lewis, Regrika Dorsey, Jaranell Jones, Cherika Storks, Naquandra Bright, Juanette Charles, Jenell Moody, Chreka Diggs, Fran Jones, Raggina Dorsey, Michelle Jenkins, Devona Lewis, Jennifer Jones, Ashton Williams, Whitley Hamilton, Joycelyn Collins, Alasha Keller, Shakira Braxton, Shara Braxton, Jalisa Sheppard, Ashira Rome, Geraldlyn Sheppard and Janee Lumar.
