Zeringue, Funk lead all-district team

LUTCHER – St. Charles Catholic catcher Jessie Zeringue and Lutcher headcoach Helen Funk highlight the all-District 9-3A softball team announced recently.

Zeringue, a senior, was named the district MVP after batting .345 with 22runs batted in and a .529 slugging percentage. Zeringue has also been invitedto play in the Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s all-star doubleheader to be held at LSU’s Tiger Field June 10.

Funk was selected the district’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Bulldogs to the district title and a berth in the state tournament. Lutcheradvanced to the semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Teurlings Catholic.

Joining Zeringue on the first team were pitcher Carlie Humphries, designated hitter Breeze Vicknair, first baseman Amber Boe, second baseman Kassie Waguespack, outfielder Toni Riley and shortstop Michelle Roussel from Lutcher and pitcher Marci Martin, first baseman Courtney Vicknair and outfielders Cristin Clement and Lacey Trepagnier from St. Charles Catholic. Named to the second team were catcher Tiffany Arceneaux, third baseman Heather Morgan and left fielder Lindsay Louque of Lutcher and shortstop Jenni Traina and outfielder Joanie Kepler of St. Charles Catholic. The LadyComets also placed third baseman Kristen Clement and second baseman Stephanie Trosclair on the honorable mention squad.

Humphries went 18-6 for the Lady Bulldogs as a freshman, with 130 strikeouts and a 1.73 earned run average in 146 innings of work. She alsobatted .253 with 10 RBIs and six doubles.Roussel, a junior shortstop, batted .319 with 25 RBIs, two home runs, fourtriples, seven doubles and five stolen bases. She also went 3-3 on the moundwith a 1.44 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 34 innings.Riley, a center fielder, batted .302 in her senior year with eight RBIs andeight stolen bases. She has also been selected to play in the LHSCA all-stardoubleheader next month.

Martin, a senior, went 18-5 with a .61 ERA and 130 strikeouts. She alsobatted .423 with 17 RBIs and two stolen bases.Vicknair, a senior first baseman, batted .361 with 23 RBIs and five stolenbases while scoring 22 runs.

Clement, a senior outfielder, batted .429 with 36 runs scored and 26 stolenbases.

Also making the first team were catcher Amy Pitre, third baseman Heidi Becnel and outfielder Lindsey Lejeune from E.D. White, and outfielder JamieWeil and utility player Eric North from Donaldsonville. Second team memberswere pitcher Fran Ledet, first baseman Aimee Bourgeois, second baseman Jenny Eckert and outfielder Jamie Cox from E.D. White and outfielder LatoyaHarvey from Donaldsonville.

E.D. White also had April Arceneaux and Sonnie Prejean named honorablemention while Donaldsonville had Rebecca Bergeron, Michele Landry and Ellney Smith.
