Comminie captures third place in hurdles

BATON ROUGE – West St. John’s Arlando Comminie placed third in the 110-meter hurdles to lead the River Parishes representatives at the Class 2A track and field meet at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium Thursday afternoon.

West St. John tied Lakeview for 17th place with six points. Riverside tiedErath, Springfield for 19th with four points. Episcopal scored 90 points tocapture its fourth straight state title. Port Barre was second with 78points, followed by Iota with 46, Christian Life with 42 and St. ThomasAquinas with 39.

For the girls, West St. John finished tied for 27th with Many, Loyola and VillePlatte with two points. Sacred Heart-Grand Coteau, led by outstandingperformer award winner Shameka Louis, won the competition with 56 points.

North Desoto was second with 52.5 points with Vermilion Catholic third with52. Jewel Sumner was fourth with 47 points and Christian Life fifth with 38.Comminie crossed the line in the hurdles in 14.64 seconds. Episcopal’s BrettBolden came in first in 14.39, followed by Port Barre’s Lawrence Leben in14.63. It was the second straight year that Comminie has placed third instate in the event.

Riverside’s Richie Hymel placed fourth in the high jump, clearing the bar at six feet, four inches. West St. John’s Donavon Pierre was seventh with ajump of 6-2. Westminster’s Barrett Olivier was first with a jump of 6-8.Henderson Keys of Port Barre and Lawrence Willis of Iota were second and third with jumps of 6-6.

Port Barre’s Andrew Robin, who won the javelin and shot put competitions, was named the outstanding performer of the meet.

In the girls’ competition, West St. John’s Oneka Lewis was fifth in the shotput with a throw of 32-9. Clinton’s Silver Fultz won the state title with herthrow of 41-8. North Desoto’s Evette Smith was second with a throw of 35-0, followed by Port Barre’s LaPearl Keys (34-7) and Jonesboro-Hodges’ Kira Mitchell (33-3).

Riverside’s Kelly Louque placed seventh in the javelin with a throw of 99-5.

North Desoto’s Angie Roe captured the state title with a throw of 120-7.

Lutcher will compete in the Class 3A state meet today while East St. John,Hahnville and Destrehan compete in the Class 5A meet. Competition startsat 8:15 a.m. with running events beginning at 4 p.m.
