Lutcher’s dreams stopped in semis

ALEXANDRIA – Early in their Class 3A semifinal game, both Teurlings Catholic and Lutcher were making solid contact at the plate.

The only difference, however, was that Teurlings was finding the gaps with its hits while Lutcher was being denied by the Lady Rebels’ defense.

Teurlings scored five runs in the second inning on its way to a 12-3 victory over the Lady Bulldogs at the Alexandria Youth Softball Complex. The LadyRebels (36-3) captured the state championship later that evening with a 6-0 victory over Notre Dame. Lutcher finished its season at 21-12.Ashley Cameron opened the Teurlings’ rally with one out in the top of the second by lining a single to center and going to second on a wild pitch. CallieBadeaux then reached as second baseman Kassie Waguespack bobbled her grounder, putting runners at the corners.

After a walk by Shayla Cormier loaded the bases, Beth Provost flied out to left. Cameron trotted home, giving the Lady Rebels a 1-0 lead. AimeeDevillier followed with a single to center, plating Badeaux. Cormier andDevillier scored as Tiffany Hebert lined another single to center, making it 4- 0. Hebert went to second as the ball got past center fielder Toni Riley andscored as Lauren Delahoussaye followed with a single to right. The inningended as Delahoussaye was called out for leaving the bag too early with Courtney Boudreaux at the plate.

Lutcher, which had been hitting the ball hard the first two innings, broke through for a run in the bottom of the third. Carlie Humphries led off with asingle to left and was sacrificed to second by Lindsey Louque. Waguespackfollowed by beating out a grounder between first and second, sending Humphries to third. With Riley at the plate, Waguespack broke for secondand was caught in a rundown. Waguespack got back to first safely asHumphries scored, cutting the deficit to 5-1.

Teurlings answered in the fifth. With one out, Hebert singled to left.Delahoussaye followed with a grounder to short with Hebert beating Michelle Roussel’s throw to second. Boudreaux reached on a fielder’s choice to loadthe bases with one out.

Mia Roy kept the rally going by lining a shot into the left-center field gap.

Hebert and Delahoussaye scored but Boudreaux was out at the plate on the relay throw by Roussel. Catcher Tiffany Arceneaux then tried to throw Royout at third but had her throw go by the bag. Roy came home, giving the LadyRebels an 8-1 lead.

Teurlings added three more in the sixth, again with one out. Pinch hitterLauren Young beat out a grounder to short and stole second. After a groundout, Devillier hit a sinking liner to third that was ruled to have hit the ground before Heather Morgan caught it, scoring Young to make it 9-1. Singles byHebert, her third of the game, and Delahoussaye loaded the bases.

Boudreaux followed with a single to right, scoring pinch runner Jennifer Trahan and Hebert for an 11-1 lead.

Lutcher threatened in the bottom of the inning as Riley beat out a grounder long the third baseline and Roussel reached on a dropped fly ball by Cormier in left with one out. But Provost got Morgan to hit into a force out andBreeze Vicknair to line out to second to end the inning.

Teurlings made it 12-1 in the top of the seventh as Cameron led off with a double to left and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Natalie Roy two batters later.

Lutcher began a rally in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Humphriesdelivered her second hit of the game, a double to left. One out later,Waguespack doubled to right, scoring courtesy runner Ciji LeBlanc. Rileyfollowed with her second straight single, this time to right, scoring Waguespack to make it 12-3. But Provost then got the final out by gettingAmber Boe to ground out to second.

Provost got the win for Teurlings, giving up six hits while striking out four.

Humphries took the loss, allowing 13 hits and three walks while striking out two.

“We weren’t supposed to be here and here we are,” Lutcher head coach Helen Funk said. “We’re one of the top four teams in the state. We hit theball hard and it was right at them. We made some errors and they capitalizeon them. They hit the ball well and I can’t take that away from them. I’mproud of the girls and we’re looking forward to next year.”
