DEAR EDITOR: Last year I had the good fortune of being introduced on-line to Heidi “Mynx” Hogan by a mutual Internet friend, who explained to me that Heidi manages the St. John Humane Society, which is 60 miles from my home inBedico.
I wrote Heidi an e-mail letter asking her to help me find a special dog and, within a few weeks, she contacted me with a letter about Hobo who was at the shelter. Heidi brought Hobo to me and he was immediately at homewith my family and other pets. I have always taken in pre-owned pets butHobo was my first shelter adoption and my first older (he is six years old) adoption but certainly not my last.
To list the many advantages of adopting an older shelter pet would require too much space, but I can sum it up in a few words – maturity, manners, gratitude and abundant love they so willingly give to you.
Hobo made such an impression on my family that we decided to adopt another older shelter pet and after receiving e-mail pictures and a history on Eddie and making all the arrangements on-line, we made a trip to the St. John Humane Society animal shelter and brought him back home to livewith my mother.
My mother suffers from Alzheimer’s and Eddie has been such a blessing for her. He is well-trained and mannered and is wonderful company for her. Mysister and I take turns assisting Mom with meals and daily needs and Eddie’s care, and he has managed to win our hearts also.
I must admit that I never considered adopting a pet on-line before meeting Heidi, but this lady has a real talent for placing the right pet with the right person and I think the Internet is a wonderful tool to help her do so.
I believe thee is a real future for Internet-assisted pet adoptions and would like to encourage anyone looking for a pet to check out the animal shelters on-line.
For those interested in seeing a few animals that are available at the St. John Humane Society, call www.angelfire.com/la2/pets.
