Jobless rate up in River ParishesL’Observateur / March 8, 2000BATON ROUGE – Forty-five of Louisiana’s 64 parishes matched or beat 11- year-old employment records during January, according to the Louisiana Department of Labor.

However, unemployment rose slightly in all three of the River Parishes.

In St. Charles Parish, unemployment rose from 3.9 percent in December to5.4 percent. This is, however, a notch lower than January 1999’s mark of5.6 percent.In St. John the Baptist Parish the jobless rate rose from 5.1 to 6.8 percentbetween December and January. This month’s rate is still better than theJanuary 1999 mark of 7.2 percent.In St. James Parish, unemployment in the River Parishes took its biggest hit,jumping from 7.7 to 10.4 percent. However, this mark remains better thanthe January 1999 mark of 10.9 percent and remains the highest in the NewOrleans Metro area.

In the New Orleans metro area, which includes Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines, St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes, the lowest jobless ratewas in St. Tammany Parish at 3.5 percent.The lowest jobless rate in Louisiana was marked in Lincoln Parish, which enjoyed a 3.1 percent mark in January. East Carroll Parish had the highestunemployment, with 18.6 percent. Yet, East Carroll’s rate is below its ownJanuary 1999 rate of 21.8 percent which, at that time, was second to WestCarroll Parish’s 22.8 percent. This month, West Carroll has the second-worst unemployment with 18.3 percent.The statewide adjusted rate was 4.6 percent, Labor Secretary Garey Forstersaid, better than the 5.8 percent rate from one year ago.Back to Top
