WILLIAMS INKS WITH DEVIL RAYS – East St. John graduate GeraldWilliams agreed to a $5.75 million, two-year contract with Tampa Bayover the weekend.
Williams played with Atlanta this past season, helping the Braves advance to the World Series with a career high 17 home runs and 68 runs batted in to go with a .275 batting average. He will make $2.5 million in 2000 and$3 million in 2001. The Devil Rays have a $4 million option for 2002 witha $250,000 buyout.
The Braves aquired Williams from Milwaukee in a trade last offseason.
Williams has also played for the New York Yankees during his career.
MEALEY, WHITE GRADUATE FROM LSU – BATON ROUGE – Former Destrehan Wildcat Rondell Mealey and Hahnville Tiger Clifton White were among 26 student-athletes to receive degrees from LSU Friday.
Mealey, who received a degree in kinesiology, finished his career as the sixth-leading rusher in LSU history with 2,238 yards. White, who playeddefensive back for the Tigers in 1997, received a degree in general studies.
Mealey has also been selected to play for the Gray team in the Blue-Gray game this Saturday. The game will be televised by ABC.
LEIER RECEIVES HONORS – NEW ORLEANS – Loyola University senior middle hitter Jenny Leier, a St. Charles Catholic graduate, was recentlynamed the NAIA Region 13 volleyball player of the year. Leier also wasnamed to the NAIA All-American honorable mention team and to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s all-Louisiana collegiate women’s volleyball first team.
DESTREHAN HAS TOURNAMENT SUCCESS – DESTREHAN – The Destre- han Lady Cats recently placed first in the KFC/Taco Bell Classic at Destrehan and second at the Pizza Hut Invitational. Joevone Markey wasthe Tournament MVP in the KFC/Taco Bell Classic with Ashley Sentimore, Megan Stock and Quinina Sinceno also making the all-tournament team.
Sentimore and Markey also made all-tournament at the Pizza Hut Invitational.
LANDRY COMPLETES UNDEFEATED SEASON – HAHNVILLE – The Eual J.
Landry Middle School Lady Tigers volleyball team completed the 1999 season with an 8-0 record.
Team members were Tiffany Scott, Toriana Ingram, Theresa Borne, Tondra Stipe, Shelena Simmons, Brittani Williams, Taneeka Dukes, Brandy Dinvaut, Desiree Champagne, Stacia Joseph, Whitney Scott, Valaune Bullock, Vanessa Smith, Renida Ingram, Marianna White, Kaswanna Isaac, Ebony Brown, Renata Brown and Ashley Lockett. The team manager wasJanna Gordon. Head coach Darla LeBlanc was assisted by Julie Austin andMona Champagne.
