Carr leads Destrehan at state meet

NEW ORLEANS – Destrehan’s Mike Carr put in an All-American performance for the Wildcats at the Division I state swim meet Saturday afternoon at the UNO Lakefront Arena Pool.

The senior won the state title in the 200-yard individual medley and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke, achieving All-American consideration times in both. Carr’s accomplishments helped the Wildcatsplace sixth in the meet.

Jesuit won its 13th straight state title with 500 points. ArchbishopRummel was a distant second with 270.5 points with Catholic third with222. Mandeville was fourth with 214, followed by Northshore with 182,Destrehan with 141 and Brother Martin with 98. Barbe (78), Natchitoches-Central (77.5) and Covington (55) rounded out the top 10. Hahnville was17th with 23 points.

“I was very impressed with them,” Destrehan coach Karin Finn said of her team. “They swam their hearts out today.”In the 200-yard individual medley, Carr took the lead in the breaststroke and started to pull away. He touched the wall in one minute, 54.64seconds, 2.02 seconds ahead of Jesuit’s Myles Jaynes. Both made the All-American consideration time of 1:57.00. Destrehan’s Chris Dixon wasseventh with a time of 2:01.24.Carr also posted an All-American qualifying time and just missed the All- American qualifying time of 57.50 in placing second in the 100-yardbreaststroke with a time of 57.80. Rummels’ Matthew Rucker won theevent in a Louisiana High School Athletic Association record time of 56.81, earning All-American qualifying honors. Jesuit’s Nick Authementalso made the consideration time of 1:00.50, finishing in 59.37 to placethird.

“It feels pretty good,” Carr, who is nicknamed “Yoda” because one of his coaches is always telling him to look inside himself, said of his day. “Ihad the goals to swim my fastest and win the 200 IM and to keep up with Rucker. I felt really good in the water.”The Destrehan 200-yard medley relay team opened the meet with a fourth place finish in 1:41.74. Jesuit nipped Rummel for first with an All-American consideration time of 1:39.00. The Raiders also had a AAC timeof 1:40.39. Catholic was third in 1:41.28.Dixon turned in a third-place time of 55.86 in the 100-yard backstroke.Catholic’s Robbie Wright was first in 54.93, followed by Northshore’sJustin Boyd in 55.16.Hahnville’s David Bohnsack closed strong to place third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.07. Jesuit’s Jaynes placed first in an All-Americanconsideration time of 4:41.13. Covington’s Jonathan James was second in4:50.98. Bohnsack also placed second in the consolations and 10th overallin the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.17. Jesuit’s Nathan Stibrichwon the event in an AAC time of 1:43.13.Destrehan’s Kevin Walsh placed 13th in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.71.Brother Martin’s Patrick Daigle was the state titlist, finishing in 22.40.Destrehan’s 200-yard freestyle relay team placed ninth with a time of 1:38.87. Jesuit edged out Rummel for the state title, 1:27.50-1:27.59. Bothwere AAC times as was Mandeville’s third place time of 1:29.09. The Wildcats’ 400-yard freestyle relay team concluded the competition with a seventh-place time of 3:35.98. Jesuit again defeated Rummel forthe title, getting an All-American consideration time of 3:13.21.
