LUCY – The moon was full, Carl Gauthier’s arm was red-hot, and the West St. John second-string team got a lot of time to play last night as theRams cake-walked all over Redeemer-Seton 54-8.
With Gauthier throwing seven attempts with six completions for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns, and 13 different runners rushing for 147 yards and 5 touchdowns, Redeemer-Seton wasn’t even in the game.
The tone of the night was set early in the first quarter when Gauthier moved the Rams all the way down to Redeemer’s goal line and with 11:28 to play in the game, tiny (5 foot 1 inch) Norman Strickland ran the ball four yards for the first touchdown. West St. John then went for asuccessful 2 point conversion which also set another trend for the evening. Not one extra point was made on either side the whole evening. Both teams made successful 2 point conversions.
When Redeemer finally got their hands on the ball, they were stymied by a bruising defense that stopped runners cold and blocked passes. Redeemerwas forced to punt, the first of many, for Redeemer.
West St. John quickly moved the ball with a 34-yard pass to Donriel Louisthat got the ball down to Redeemer’s 8-yard line. After a short run byAmone Lumar, Strickland again ran it in 2 yards for touchdown number 2, proving that good things come in small packages. With another 2 pointconversion, the score was 16-0.
The hapless Redeemer team looked like there might a spark in them, but it was quickly doused when linebacker Dwayne Johnson sacked quarterback Donald Allen and Redeemer was forced to punt.
The Rams took the ball on their 45 and moved it down to the one where Lumar barreled it in for another score and Gauthier passed to Marlon Jackson for another 2 point conversion. The first quarter ended with thescore 24-0 Redeemer couldn’t find any room to move on their 21 and tried to punt, but the overpowering Ram defense sacked the punter on his own 1-yard line.
West St. John’s Devin Herbert ran it in for another score. However thistime Gauthier failed to connect with Jackson and there were no extra points, the only time this happened all evening. The score was now 30-0.Redeemer got the ball on their 33 and made the best offensive effort all night by moving the ball to the Ram’s 41. On first and 10, Allen connectedwith Nick Hunter who ran it in for Redeemer’s only touchdown of the night.
Arton Nelson ran it in for the 2 point conversion and the score was 30-8 West St. John gets the ball on their 34 and with a combination of passesand rushes, gets down to the Redeemer 2-yard line where Gauthier himself runs it in. Again, there is another successful 2 point conversion and thescore is 38-8.
There were no other scores until the very end of the second quarter when Gauthier hit Marlon Jackson for a 54-yard touchdown pass. The half endedwith a score of 46-8 Redeemer came out in the second half still looking stunned and confused.
First Allen was sacked by Johnson again and then he threw an interception to Jeremy Lumar on Redeemer’s 24. Two plays later Gauthier threw aseven-yard pass to Lumar for a touchdown. To add insult to injury, Lumarthan ran the ball in for a 2 point conversion.
West St. John sent out it’s second-string team, but they were a littlegreen and after three major penalties, they were forced to punt for the first time in the game. Redeemer fared no better and punted it back. Thethird quarter ended 54-8.
There was no more scoring in the game, and the Ram’s second and third- string teams got a good scrimmage practice out of the rest of the fourth quarter.
