Lutcher falls on late field goal by Covington

LUTCHER – John Marino made the most of a second chance, kicking a 28- yard field goal with no time left to give Covington a 24-21 victory at Lutcher Friday night.
Marino had earlier missed a 38-yard field goal but a face-masking penalty against the Bulldogs gave him another opportunity.
Covington improved to 6-2 overall with the win while Lutcher fell to 6-2.
Lutcher out-gained the Lions, 393-251 but Covington scored on an interception return and blocked a punt to set up another score.
Thomas Ricks completed 14-of-26 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown but was also intercepted three times. Kenneth Johnson led the Bulldogreceivers with four catches for 1001 yards and a touchdown. Brad Fussellcompleted 7-of-16 for 97 yards and two interceptions for Covington.
Jerron Wishom was the Bulldogs’ leading rusher with 69 yards on 6 carries. Covington’s Kane Penton carried 32 times fo 147 yards and twotouchdowns.
Lutcher got on the scoreboard first as Johnson caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from Ricks with 11:37 left in the first quarter. Covingtonanswered with a 7-yard run by Penton with 5:44 left to tie the game at 7.
Ricks put the Bulldogs back ahead with a 9-yard run with 3:31 left in the quarter.
Damian Ursin scored on an 8-yard run with 1:08 left in the second quarter to increase Lutcher’s lead to 21-7 at the break.
Lawrence Darby brought the Lions closer with a 55-yard interception return with 1:18 left in the third quarter. Penton then tied the score at 21on a 6-yard run set up by a blocked punt.
Lutcher hosts St. James next week in District 9-3A play.
DESTREHAN 14, SOUTH LAFOURCHE 13
GALLIANO – The Destrehan offense, which had struggled the whole night against South Lafourche, came alive in the end, sending the Wildcats to a 14-13 victory and clinching at least a tie for the team’s fourth straight district title.
Destrehan, 7-1 overall, 4-0 in District 7-5A, can wrap up the title with a win at home against cross-parish rival Hahnville next Friday.
South Lafourche fell to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in district.
Destrehan trailed 13-7 heading into the final minutes. But with 1:20 left,Ivan Mashia connected with Fred Smith on a 41-yard touchdown pass.
Jonathan Scifres added the eventual game-winning extra point.
South Lafourche drove to the 40 but was stopped on their final possession.
Destrehan took a 7-0 lead with four seconds left in the first quarter on a 97-yard fumble return by Damian Richard. South Lafourche came back witha 13-yard touchdown reception by Anthony Pitre and field goals of 30 and 35 yards by Aaron Montez.
Destrehan was held to 107 yards in the game, three rushing. Mashiacompleted 10 of his 22 passes for 104 yards. South Lafourche was alsoheld in check, gaining 258 yards, 156 on the ground.
ST. JAMES 32,E.D. WHITE 7
VACHERIE – The St. James Wildcats put on an aerial display in their 32-7victory at home over E.D. White Friday night.Corey Webster passed for over 350 yards in the contest. Davin Denniscaught seven of Webster’s passes for 265 yards. The Wildcats also rushedfor 120 yards in the contest.
St. James improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in District 9-3A. E.D. White fellto 5-3 overall and 0-2 in district.
St. James travels to cross-parish rival Lutcher in District 9-3A actionnext Friday. The game is the Wildcats’ season finale.
DONALDSONVILLE 14, ST. CHARLES CATHOLIC 9
DONALDSONVILLE – St. Charles Catholic dropped a District 9-3A contest,14-9, at Donaldsonville Friday night.
The loss dropped the Comets to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in district while Donaldsonville improved to 3-5 and 1-2.
St. Charles Catholic hosts Christian Life Friday.
