WSJ, Redeemer very similar

EDGARD – On one side of the ball Friday night, fans at the Redeemer- Seton-West St. John game will see a Rams’ team with one of the topquarterbacks in the district and excellent skill people with the potential to score on every play.

On the other side of the ball, the fans will see a Rams’ team with one of the top quarterbacks in the district and excellent skill people with the potential to score on every play.

Teams don’t come much closer in appearance than West St. John andRedeemer-Seton. Both teams are in the Class 2A playoff hunt led byprolific offenses.

West St. John (5-2 overall, 2-2 in District 7-5A) has the leading passer inthe River Parishes in Carl Gauthier. Gauthier is coming off a 326-yardperformance against Riverside, completing 23-of-40 passes. On theseason, the senior has completed 101 of his 172 passes for 1,504 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Brian Lumar has caught 37 of those passes for 555 yards and five touchdowns to rank first in the metro area in Class 2A. He had a standoutgame Friday night, catching nine passes for 103 yards. He also had 10tackles on defense. Jeremy Lumar is also among the area leaders, catching14 passes for 316 yards and four touchdowns. Lumar also has three othertouchdowns rushing and returning kicks. The Rams also have receiverDonriel Louis and tight end Marlon Jackson who combined for 11 catches and 159 yards Friday.

Redeemer-Seton (5-2, 2-1) counters with Donald Allen at quarterback.

Allen has completed 76 of his 144 passes this season for 1,090 yards and 12 touchdowns. He completed 11-of-27 passes for 183 yards and threetouchdowns in the Rams’ 36-14 victory at False River Friday.

Junior Nick Hunter has been Allen’s main target. Hunter ranked among themetro leaders with 19 catches for 391 yards and six touchdowns going into last week’s game. Allen will also look to sophomore split end DamienHoward. Junior Kendrick Bailey is the Rams’ leading rusher with 360 yardsand eight touchdowns on 60 carries going into the False River game.

“They look a lot like us,” West St. John coach Laury Dupont said ofRedeemer-Seton. “They are wide open and have some excellent skillpeople. They have some talent and have got the potential to score againstyou.”Redeemer-Seton utilizes a 40 defense that is very aggressive. Thatdefense is led by a defensive line dominated by seniors Darrell Gordon, James Tillman and Stephen Howard. Seniors David Grillier and FrankStewart patrol the secondary.

West St. John is coming off a 29-22 loss at Riverside in District 7-5Aplay. The Rams rallied from a 22-8 halftime deficit before the Rebelsdrove for the winning score in the final minutes. Before that final drive,the Rams had held Riverside to 11 yards in the second half.

“The kids didn’t quit,” Dupont said. “We moved the ball down the field thewhole night. We had the most first downs (18) we’ve had this season. CarlGauthier threw the ball well all night. Brian Lumar played exceptional allnight on both sides of the ball. Riverside just made the plays when theyhad to. The players played hard the whole game. Our kids showed up to playand their’s did too. It was a great high school football game and it’s toobad somebody had to lose.”
